“You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes” are a few of The Eagles most recognized lyrics, from their chart topping classic, Lyin’ Eyes. While most would believe that “you can’t hide your lyin’ eyes,” I beg to differ.
Its long been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. But what if we took another look (pardon the blatant pun) at the eyes all around us? What if we viewed eyes as colorful viels that protect the deep, delicate, and sometimes vulnerable souls that lie beneath them?
During the worst days of my life I have smiled through the pain. Wait. I know what you’re thinking. I smiled with my mouth; it wasn’t genuine. You’re wrong.
Standing in the receiving line at mhy grandfather’s wake, I smiled and greeted his guests. I smiled with my whole face, and though my eyes may have betrayed me with their streaming tears, they were smiling brightly. Each hand I shook, each hug I braced was greeted with smiling eyes.
Standing before the judge as she pronounced me divorced, I swallowed any and all emotion and smiled brightly, making firm eye contact, and thanking Her Honor. Nobody in that courtroom knoew the anguish that lay beneath my smiling eyes, just as no one had known the heartache that ravaged my very being that night in the funeral home and during the months after.
So, the next time you think someone’s eyes “give them away,” think again. They may be lyin,’…or the may just be smilin’.
